This 5 movement suite for percussion and optional tape is based on the environmental and political issues the surround the James Bay Cree and their land, where I spent three of my summers . All recordings were made by me on location in northern Quebec. ca. 30 min.
Instrumentation:
Marimba (5.0 octave)
Vibraphone (able to be played on marimba)
Multi Percussion: 2 different cymbals, 3 pitched toms, bass drum (mounted/flat), kick drum, gong, pieces of wood*
*Originally broken marimba bars, strung up and struck. This multi-setup may be adjusted to suite the performer's needs and access to instruments.

Mvt I: Maakwaayahtikw (Deep in the Forest): The boreal forest of Northern Quebec, as it was before people. Features marimba and vibraphone.
Mvt II: Uspokannebeow (The Pipe Man): My experience living with the Cree people, who gave me the nickname because I smoke a tobacco pipe, as their ancestors used to. Features solo marimba.
Mvt III: Uskuwin (Rupture): The introduction of industry, in the forms of overwhelming forestry and logging, and the starvation of river systems for hydroelectric power. Features marimba and multi setup.
Mvt IV: Uhchikuwaapiu (She Sheds Tears): The land, after its exhaustion- Many are forced to move on in search of other hunting grounds. Features solo marimba.
Mvt V: Chiiwetau (Returning Home): A hopeful look at a future, where the Cree and the Industrialists can coexist, and where the ecosystems of the boreal forest can be sustained. Features solo marimba.
